Legends line up for Phillip Island Classic
The greatest line-up of
driving legends ever assembled at an Australian historic race meeting
will turn the 2008 Shannons Phillip Island Classic from March 7-9 into
as big a spectacle off as on the track.
And with a confirmed
entry of more than 500 vehicles spanning six decades, including over 50
coming from overseas, this year’s Classic has already written itself
into the history books as the biggest meeting of its type in the
Southern Hemisphere.
Famous former champions
invited to the meeting include the Victorian Historic Racing
Association’s Patron, Sir Jack Brabham, Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan,
Australian Gold Star (Driver’s) champions Leo Geoghegan, Kevin Bartlett,
Australian 1.5 litre champion and Bathurst winner John Harvey Australian
Grand Prix winners Frank Matich and John Goss, Alfredo Costanzo and John
Bowe, former Touring Car champions Norm Beechey, Bob Jane, Jim Richards
and Glenn Seton and four-time Australian Hillclimb champion Alan
Hamilton.
Former Formula One
drivers Tony Gaze, Frank Gardner and Tim Schenken, Armstrong 500 and
Bathurst winner Harry Firth, Trials legend George Reynolds, leading
1950s Grand Prix driver Reg Hunt, Armstong 500 winner Frank Coad,
touring car ‘royalty’ Fred and Christine Gibson, Under 2-litre
Australian Touring Car Champion Michael Stillwell, Goggomobil Dart
creator Bill Buckle, sports sedan champion Bryan Thomson, racing legends
Brian Sampson and Brian Shead and well-known motoring writer and former
racer Bill Tuckey have also been invited.
While several of those
invited are currently in ill-health and are uncertain to appear, those
that do will have autograph hunters’ pens running dry.
Not all will spend
their time in the paddock though. As the meeting celebrates the 50th
anniversary worldwide of the Formula Junior category, it is hoped that
Australia’s first Formula Junior Champion, Frank Matich, will do a
parade of honour in an FJ car.
It’s also the 50th
anniversary of Goggomobil in Australia and Bill Buckle will also parade
one of the ubiquitous fibreglass Dart sports cars that he designed and
built.
Two-time Australian
Touring Car champion (1993 and 1997) Glenn Seton will be racing a Ford
Capri at the meeting in the Over 3000cc Touring Car races, while his
famous father Barry ‘Bo’ will campaign a similar car in the Under 3000cc
races.
Seven-time Bathurst
winner Jim Richards will demonstrate the new Ford Mustang he has
recently purchased for historic racing.
Meanwhile 2008 Shannons
Phillip Island Classic Patron and 1984/85 Australian Gold Star winner
John Bowe, who only retired from active V8 Supercar racing in December
last year, will be seen at the wheel of at least two racing cars.
Bowe will demonstrate
the actual Elfin Formula Ford which he drove to victory in the 1973
Formula Ford championship, while in the events for Group M & O racing
cars of the 1960s he will be racing a very rapid Brabham BT14 Ford that
scored a string of successes in the 1.5 litre category in the hands of
Bib Stillwell and John Harvey
“The meeting has a
fabulous entry and I’m really looking forward to competing –
particularly as I believe the Brabham is a top car and has a real show
of a podium place,” said Bowe.
“But I don’t want to
make to much fuss about it. I want to keep the category to myself before
all the other ageing V8 Supercar drivers get wind of it and move over to
historic racing to have some real fun!”
