PORSCHE 906 AT SANDOWN
Ian Henderson drove his Porsche 906 in the regularity event in November and made a historic twin with the Porsche 904 GTS of Ken Price. This 1966 model is one of 65 made by the factory racing division and was delivered to the French franchise Sunnauto for the 1967 Le Mans event. With its monocoque construction, streamlined fibreglass body and 2 Litre flat 6 engine producing 220 bhp it represented a significant step in engineering advancement at Porsche.

The car spent many years in the USA as part of a collection and whilst maintaining its original engine was fully restored in 1998 in England. It then came to Australia and was purchased by Ian last year. The owner a very keen Porsche enthusiast plans to use this rare historic vehicle in future VHRR events.                                                               Roger James

QUEENSLAND’S BEST KEPT SECRET
Noosa Historic Hillclimb 13-14th November

Responding to the annual insistence of my Mooloolaba cousin who shows off his 1966 Ford Mustang, I decided to trek north to attend “The Hill ” as the local call it. What an event! Held on state forest closed roads at the back of Noosa, the 180 entries included hill climb specials to tin tops ranging from an Austin 7 to a GT40 and invitee Kevin Bartlett in the 7 Litre Monaro that won a 24 hr race at Bathurst. The Course is spectacular being not too steep with testing corners and produced 55 seconds as FTD. The crowd of spectators, with service by a shuttle bus had plenty to see including an XJ Jaguar barrel  roll  down the hill. Peter Kyriakidis, the lone Victorian, did well in his Datsun 1600 and made me consider this 2 day event with 6 runs per entry is an excuse to visit the Sunshine Coast. For 2005, the VHRR could seek entries from the HRCC (Qld) without upsetting the Mustang or GT Falcon priding locals.

BOOK REVIEW                                                                     Roger James

FAST LADY –MY LIFE IN MOTOR SPORT by Joy Rainey
It seems to me that autobiographies are always more genuine than biographies and certainly contain more amazing events than novels. Such is the case with Joy’s life in motor sport. She is small in statue like her famous father Murray but big, just so big in character, determination and in “seizing the day”. All this and a skilful writer as well! You will relish her experiences in Geelong and Europe, the events she competes, the cars she drives, her technical descriptions of engine modifications and racing car set-ups and you will be familiar with the people around her. Her parents named their little girl well because she overcomes her unique difficulties with sheer joy. Available from Tony Johns Motor Books @ $60

A NEW IMAGE FOR HISTORIC RACING                           Roger James

Formula Atlantic: Backround

Whilst Ralt RT4 have been involved in historic racing previously, the Formula Atlantic events at Sandown in November provided a spectacular  grid and exciting racing. The field of 24 cars presented with remarkable heritage which included the 1972 March 722 of Niki Lauda,  1975 Chevron B29 of Brian Redman, 1975 March 75B of Gilles Villeneuve and the Modus M3 BDD which won the 1975 British Championship.

Formula Atlantic started in the UK in 1971, was broadly based on F2, became Formula Pacific in the USA and then Formula Mondial in Europe, with the term meaning “universal”.

These cars were first included in the Australian GP at Wanneroo W.A. in 1979  with John Smith in a Ralt RT1 finishing 4th. From 1981 until 1984, the Australian GP was exclusively for these cars with Ralt RT4’s providing wins for Brazilian Roberto Moreno (81,83,84) and Frenchman Alain Prost in 1982.

Formula Atlantic: Specifications

The FA cars are powered by the Cosworth BDA (Belt Driven Arrangement) 1600cc engine based on the Ford Escort Block with a twin cam, 4 Valve per cylinder head. Bowser fuel is provided by 48mm or 50mm dual Weber carburettors. Gearbox is a 5 speed Hewland FT 200 with Wheel sizes and wing specifications all standardised.

Formula Atlantic: New Association

The Historic Formula Atlantic and European Formula 2 Association was formed recently to advance the future of this group of historic racing cars and the inaugural office bearers are Bryan Miller (NSW), Colin Haste (NSW), Andrew Fellows (Qld) and Peter Brennan (Vic). The aims of the association include demonstrating the group as a viable historic class, providing close competition without mixing with other classes of cars with dissimilar performance and negotiating with event promoters for 5 events per year. The association will announce their 2005 calandar shortly.  All competitors participate in the John Bowe trophy series, so named as John Bowe is the groups patron. Points are awarded for starting, travelling interstate and finishing places. Current point scorers are Jason Clements 17, Andrew Makin 15, Peter Whelan 15, Jamie Larner 14.5 and Vince Holland 14. There is a F.A.  Association in Canada and discussions have commenced about international opportunities for cars and drivers. With the promise of grids of 25 cars, professional presentation, reliability and crowd pleasing competitive racing these cars will undoubtly earn themselves a place at all major historic meetings and strong sponsorship.

Sandown International Raceway
Please note the official name which has stood since its opening in 1962.The name Sandown Park which is creeping into conversations is an adjacent dog racing track.
