Ron Parkes Retires from Cams- Brian (Brique) Reed Appointed
After more than 30 years with Cams, Ron Parkes has retired. Ron served in many roles including Victorian State Manager and was the Historic Motor Racing Administrator for over 20 years. Well known to VHRR members because of the helpful approach in assisting with the understanding of regulations and guidance with both log book and certificate of description applications. We wish Ron good health and happiness in retirement.

It is pleasing to announce that VHRR member Brian Reed has been appointed to this position and commenced activities on July 13th. Brian commenced motor racing in an Elfin Clubman in 1964 and was very active including a number of drives in the Bathurst touring car races. His heart is really in all aspects of the sport as he has been a commentator, journalist, radio broadcaster and an administrator. He was founder and is the current president of the Elfin Owners and Drivers Club inc. and a past president of the Light Car Club (Bendigo Division) Brian Knows historic racing cars and will be of diligent assistance to owners and drivers. We wish him well.                                                                      Roger James

Book Review                                                                            Roger James

Back Fire- The story of Alan Clark: Edited Robert Coucher ($30.00)

“Never heard of him,” I hear you say. Well, perhaps you have because Alan wrote the back page article called “Back Fire” in the English Classic Car magazine. If that does not strike a note in your memory, then you will certainly remember

Mr. Toad of Toad Hall. This man personifies that character.

This book, newly released in paperback is about a far from average Englishman who had an abundance of passion for his vast collection of cars as well as his castle, his career in Parliament , his writings and family.

You will recall Lou Molina’s saying “ There are showers and goers. I am a goer.”

This man was definitely a goer as he hated restored cars and absolutely forbad the “tarting-up” process to be applied to any of his. Not only that, but he motored the things in an era before motoring became ‘driving behind the idiot in front.’

So, if you are looking for a fireside read this winter, visit Tony Johns Bookshop.

MURRAY CARTER—VHRR GUEST SPEAKER –JUNE MEETING

Murray as a Champion Driver.

He seemed to gain a place in every race he ever entered. His best was a third at Bathurst in a Ford in 1978. Murray values this higher than winning a V8 Supercar Championship. His Corvette Special outpaced most factory sportscars.

Murray as an Auto Engineer.

He built his own. The Carter Corvette Special started out to be an open wheeler with a holden engine. But a V8 engine which “fitted nicely”, Cooper copy wheels and suspension but a flight upside down at Phillip Island all turned it into a very fast sports car. Now he is fitting the Motec computer stuff into his Corvette to do better in the current Nation Cup Series.

Murray with his Sponsors.

“They contacted me. I never contacted them.” Seems to be his approach. One oil company sent him money so that the competition companies could not get him.

“How much do you need?” another company asked. “ More than you will give.”

Was his response. Above all else, he was very disappointed that his sponsors never really capitalised on his continuous outstanding results.

Murray and his sense of humour.

Asked about a Ford competitor , he responded “Moffat who?” On his XK 120 Jaguar “ the most expensive oil leak I ever had.” When Bob Jane asked the field for some place swapping to put on a good show at Sandown, “ I ended up beating him and winning the race. Bob was very strong about telling me never to do that again. I took no notice.”

Murray at 74.

Younger, slimmer, lovely wife at his side, and keener and still very competitive are the words that you would use for this man who works on a racing car every day.

Footnote:  Reflecting upon Murray’s entertaining presentation, I arrived at the conclusion that VHRR members are very lucky because of the opportunity we have to meet and know the champions of our sport. Over the years we have met world champions (Moss, Brabham, Jones), Australian champions (Hunt,Gardner,Brock,Harvey,Bond,Firth,Hamilton,Walton,Stillwell,Schenken,

Hoinville, Schuppan) and the engineers (Stone, Harrop and Tate) and many more. I bet keen readers of Melbourne golf clubs or tennis clubs have never met Peter Thompson, Tiger Woods, Boris Becker or Rod Laver.

So, tell your friends in Motor Sport and invite them to join our club.

Victorian Flagmarshalling Team Inc.
As we all know the “Flaggies” do a great job. All dedicated volunteers without whom no race meeting could happen. Working in all weather conditions, we owe these people for their efforts. All are UNPAID.

Members get points for attendance as an incentive. The VHRR donate regalia each year to be part of the prize pool so if any member feels that they could donate any goods or services the flaggies would be most appreciative.
