AUSTRALIAN MOTORSPORTS SHOW 2003
This
event was held at the Royal Exhibition Buildings on the weekend of 22
& 23 February. Our club was offered a “complimentary site” at
the show by the promoters to promote Historic Racing. With the help of
our in house design team of Jervis Ward and Mark Barton of THE CREATIVE
PARROTT and Mat McLennan of SYNERGY
DESIGN GROUP we managed to put together an excellent display site. Many
thanks to the designers.
Thanks
also to the owners of the magnificent cars on display which were a great
attraction. We had Dean Butler’s 8CTF Maseratti, Michael Wilson’s
L34 Torana Group C Tourer and Bob Harborrow’s Lola F5000, all looking
magnificent and beautifully presented. Thanks to Ian Tate for organising
the cars.
All
of this did not happen without a lot of help and input from club members
and I would like to thank Don Kinsey, John Pyke, Jon Bate, Jim Russell,
Peter Matthews, John D’Asques, Alex McLaughglin, Noel Robson, Rob
Graham, Peter Hill, Marg & Eddie Dobbs representing the club and
also Group N, Don Knight (President Historic Touring Car Assoc) and his
team for making the time
available to man the stand for the duration of the show. Thanks also to
the ever reliable Dot & Mike Devine for assistance with transport of
display items. We could not have been involved without the help of all
of these people.
The
Promoters were very happy with our display which they say was probably
the best of the Amateur organisations at the show. Promotion material
for Phillip Island was made available to the public with more than 900
P/I Posters handed out and information about the club and Historic
Racing Generally was available in an effort to attract new members.
Order forms for
the Sandown 2002 video were available with some advance orders taken.

Appeal for
the Club Library.
Our hardworking
librarian George Spanos has appealed to any members that might have any books or videos and old race programs. The club is
trying to put together a full set of Australian Motor Sports Magazine so
copies of AMS would be appreciated. Badges and any other racing
memorabilia are needed to fill our cabinets. See George any Wednesday or
club nights or phone Llyod Shaw on 0415-351-164

The Murray
Rainey Storey
The May 2003
edition of English Motor Sport features a three page article on the
remarkable Australian Murray Rainey as the reminisces of his daughter
Joy.
With a full page
photo of Murray, it’s a most interesting story. Details of his success
with a MK 9 Cooper Norton in the 1950’s and then of his decision to
take it to England and compete in Europe. The story is titled
“Confounding the Experts” because at that critical time the UK
Authorities banned Methanol and decreed that petrol must be used. To
overcome this disadvantage Murray decided to supercharge the single
cylinder engine. “Cannot be done” said the experts including Phil
Irving. Read on and learn of the successes of this innovative Aussie.
Motor Sport is available in the week before the current date from Tony
Johns Bookshop or a month later from newsagents. It is rare to see a
down under article in the magazine.

Ashes
Distribution – A New Service.
Drivers with
Cams Competition Licences and members of Cams affiliated car clubs may
wish to utilise this new service: that is the distribution of cremation
ashes at the deceased favourite circuit be it Sandown, Phillip Island,
Winton or Calder. The deceased may even specify a particular section of
their choice such as the starting grid, pit lane or a nominated corner
provided all is nominated on the official Will Addendum Form ($100 Fee)
which accompanies the Certificate of Description ($500 Fee) designed to
ensure the remains are true to specifications. The ashes must be
presented in the official Ashes Jar ($300 Fee) complete with quick release cap and twin return springs.
Relatives are warned to ensure the deceased does not wear the Cams
approved triple layer fire proof driving suit as it is not suitable on
this occasion.
The Wednesday Lunch Boys
The committee whilst hoping the
Wednesday Lunch Boys use this new and obviously needed service cannot
endorse any commercial product even one with Cams backing.
