Group S
In
1960 and '61 I hooned around the streets of Adelaide in a TR3 that
belonged to the house where I baby-sat the kids, on the pretext of
clearing the cobwebs from the engine. I couldn't afford one, and I sure
lusted after one. In 1963 I drove my mates Morgan Plus 4. Too expensive
for my state of wealth at the time, but envy reigned supreme. I could
afford a Bugeye but wanted an MGA which was still out of reach. And as
for the MGA Twin Cam...
So
I went unfulfilled whilst marriage, mortgage and kids sapped dry my
wallet. BUT I HADN'T FORGOTTEN. Now that I have grey hair, some spare
cash (that is, before I had the car), a wife still (pit crew), and kids
who fend for themselves, I can afford to indulge myself:
And
race what I could never previously own,
with
cars I hungered after all the time,
with
a group of like minded friends
who
also are indulging past passions
That
is what Group S is all about
The
CAMS manual waxes aloquently about it being a forum to race production
sports cars, sometimes known as "Classic Sports Cars", in a
form that does not radically alter its appearance or character.
I
like my definition better. - Jon Bate
