Lightbulb Les Wright's Benneton B186

Benneton B186

The restoration has taken over two years attached are some shots of the car.

The rebuilding of the engine and management system (which was missing), etc, etc, has been a long and frustrating process, fortunately with some good Aussie know how (and a talented team of people) have contributed including Dave Vegher in America and Heidi Mader in Switzerland, the engineer who built these motors in the day for the Brabham and Benetton F1 teams, and later Megatron the engine is now producing over 800 hp at 3.3 bar and 9,700 revs, which is in line with the race hp of the day (we donít envisage using that much boost, in historics).

At the 1986 GP at Monza Berger saw the turbo boost flash to 5.5 bar, Heidi Mader estimated that to be worth 1,300 H.P. making it the most powerful engine in Formula One, For the Italian Grand Prix Mader built a qualifying motor with a larger turbo and Berger was clocked at 218.23 mph to record the fastest F1 speed ever (see story in ''The 1000 bhp Grand Prix cars'').

Gerhard Berger finished 6th in Brazil, and in Spain, 3rd at Imola, and was 2nd fastest in practice at Spa finishing 10th in the race,10th at Hockenheim, 7th in Austria 5th at Monza and 1st in Mexico.

Photos of the engine on the dyno Andrew from Superior Automotive makes adjustments.
