Default Bob Harborow's 1965 COOPER BRM F11

1965 COOPER BRM F11

Peter Ellenborgen Pic

Cooper Chassis No. F24 65 was built in 1965 as one of 2 run in that years European Formula 11 as works cars and fitted with the-new BRM F2 Engine. Some 7 cars were built and Cooper took the decision to have its' cars entered and run by Ken Tyrrell on behalf of the works.

The drivers for that works entry for 1965 were John Surtees, Bob Bondurant and principally Jackie Stewart. This car was predominantly driven by Stewart at all UK and European GP's, Incidentally, Stewart was 1964 Formula Ill Champion at that stage and ultimately finished 3rd in the F1 Championship that year (1965) in a BRM.

The car was campaigned by Steward in some 20 odd races of up to 200 miles over the very extensive season at such circuits as Pau, Reims, Rouen and Albi in France; Crystal Palace, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Brands Hatch in the UK; Kariskoga in Sweden; Pergusa and Rome in Italy and Solitude in West Germany.

Whilst the car ran strongly in many races, Stewart's highest placing was 2nd and the car finished 6 th overall in the European Championship that year.

The car was returned to the Cooper Works at the end of the season and in April 1966 it was sold, less the engine to Reg Howell in the USA.
The car spent some 12 years in America, fitted with a Ford Twin Cam motor and its detailed history is unknown.

In 1978, the chassis was brought to Australia and reunited with its original engine (8004) and the Collotti gearbox.

The car was' purchased by the current owner in 1991, and has been run at some 20 national and international meetings since that date.

Original documentation in the form of letters from John Cooper offering and selling the car to the US in 1966, along with various other BRM and technical correspondence are retained with the car.
